A guide on how to get your home spring ready by Georgia Peterson

During the winter months, it’s hard to find the motivation to deep clean your home, but March is the perfect time to freshen up your house in time for Summer.

It may seem like a daunting task but it’s easier than you think with the right tips, tricks and checklist...If you’re ready to tackle the big clean, read our advice on how to get started below.

Start with tasks that you can complete in each room

Starting with individual rooms will help you to feel organised as you will have a process in place...

  • Step 1: Wipe down skirting boards and architrave.
  • Step 2: Do a quick check of your room for any winter damage like cracks.
  • Step 3: Use the brush attachment on your vacuum to remove dust, loose debris and dead bugs stuck in the window track.

Look at your gutters

Guttering is an important part of your home and protects your home from outside elements and water damage. By having your guttering frequently maintained and checked, you will greatly lower the chances of any blockages, cracks or issues developing.

  • Step 1: Clear and prevent blockages. Scoop leaves and debris out with a gutter clearing tool or trowel.
  • Step 2: Fix loose downpipes (Drill marked positions, insert wall plugs and fix bracket in place).
  • Step 3: Look for any signs of staining or other damages that are water-related, such as rotting.

Don’t forget the loft

It doesn’t matter whether your roof is brand new or decades old. it will still need occasional maintenance to ensure that your home is protected from the elements.

  • Step 1: Remove everything as an empty room is the easiest to clean.
  • Step 2: Wipe away every inch of dust using a soft-brush vacuum attachment or mop, then dampen a microfiber cloth and wipe the surface.
  • Step 3: Inspect your Insulation. The interior ceilings, walls and floors in your home should feel warm and dry. When drywall and panelling inside a home feel damp or cold, there is not enough insulation.
  • Step 4: Look for moisture and mould.

General Tips And Tricks

Now that we've covered the main elements of your spring clean, we thought that we would share some helpful tips and tricks...

  • An easy way to clean your microwave is to add lemon juice or white vinegar to a bowl of water and heating it on full power for about five minutes and wipe it down.
  • All-purpose cleaner is safe to use on the majority of surfaces in your home and beneficial to have in your cleaning basket.
  • A cost-effective way to keep your sponges for longer is to pop the wet sponge in the microwave for 30 seconds to remove any bacteria. Just wait a minute or two before pulling out since it will still be hot.
